Maple milk is milk sweetened with real maple syrup - a simple alternative to chocolate and other flavored milks. Learn the perfect ratio and easy variations.

I live in Vermont, the maple syrup capital of the United States, and I've had more than my fair share of maple-flavored products. But I don't think I had ever had a simple glass of maple syrup and milk. I was surprised by how good it is!

There's something cozy and nostalgic about this beverage. It reminds me of strawberry and chocolate milks I loved as a kid. But this is even better because it's made with two real ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.

Enjoy it cold for a refreshing beverage

😍 Why You'll Love This Recipe

  1. You only need two ingredients.
  2. It makes a quick, sweet treat.
  3. You can use it as a base for other drinks.

This sweet milk would go especially well with my salted maple chocolate chip cookies, these fresh ginger cookies, or even chamomile cookies. Because you can't have cookies without milk. Or is it milk without cookies?

🍁 Ingredients

Here's everything you need to make this milk at home.

a bottle of milk and tin of maple syrup on a counter for the recipe
  • Milk: You need 1 cup of milk per serving. As for which milk to use, that is up to your personal preference. I tend to buy two percent milk, and that's what I used when testing this recipe. However, you can use whole milk or try your favorite dairy-free milk alternative. Keep in mind that some of those options are already a bit sweet. Adjust accordingly.
  • Maple syrup: I use 1 tablespoon per cup of milk for a sweet - but not too sweet - result. Start here, and if you like things sweeter, use more. My favorite maple syrup grade is the dark, robust variety, and while any real maple syrup (definitely not fake pancake syrup) will be great here, I like the strong, deep flavor of the darker grades.

Check out the recipe card below for the complete list of ingredients and quantities. ⬇️

☕ Variations

  • Cinnamon maple milk: Whisk in ¼ teaspoon cinnamon along with the maple and milk.
  • Chocolate maple milk: Add 1-2 tablespoons cocoa powder (not cocoa mix) and whisk until combined for your own homemade chocolate milk.
  • Warm maple milk: Gently heat your milk in a pan on the stove or in the microwave, then add the maple syrup. Milk can boil over quickly, so use low heat and stir often until it's heated to your liking.

🔪 Instructions

✨ Top Tips

  • Serve the milk soon after making or whisk again before serving. The maple may settle if left for too long.
  • Don't attempt this recipe with artificial maple syrup. It will taste terrible and be way too sweet. Also, please stop buying fake syrup.
  • No whisk? Combine maple and milk in a jar and shake well.

🍳 Equipment

Whisk: A small whisk that fits in your glass will make it quick and easy to mix the maple into the milk. Although you can use a spoon, a whisk will do a better job.

🥄 Make Ahead

If you want to make a batch for a crowd, multiply the ingredients by the number of servings you need and whisk the milk well before serving. You can prep this in advance, but give it another quick whisk before pouring into glasses, as the maple may separate from the milk.

☕ How to use

You can drink this milk as is, or use it in one of these ways:

  • Heated and mixed with cocoa powder for a simple hot chocolate
  • Iced and combined with espresso for an iced maple latte
  • Froth it to make a foam for topping iced coffee drinks
  • Hot or cold, and combined with chai tea for a maple chai latte
  • Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and blend for a quick maple milkshake

🙋🏻‍♂️ FAQ

Will maple syrup curdle milk?

Maple syrup does not curdle milk. Maple syrup is only slightly acidic and not enough to curdle milk like lemon juice or vinegar.

Can you mix maple syrup with milk?

Yes, it's easy to mix maple syrup with milk. The easiest way to do so is with a whisk to fully incorporate the syrup into the milk.

How do you make a maple milkshake?

A maple milkshake is made with maple syrup, ice cream, and milk. This recipe is a good base for a milkshake. You just need to add the ice cream and blend it all together.

🍪 Pairing

These are my favorite dishes to serve with this flavored milk:

  • a tray of chocolate chip oatmeal maple cookies
Salted Maple Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • a plate of chamomile cookies with flowers on side
    Chamomile Cookies
  • cookies on a blue and green background
    Ginger Cookies With Fresh Ginger
  • cake with icing on a cutting board
    Date Carrot Cake
